How does non-stop unwinding work?
Are you curious how auto-splicing joins paper reels without stopping the press? Want to see how to load a fresh reel or prepare a splice safely—while production keeps running? You’ll learn it all in the short videos below.
Our unwinders for web inkjet and sheetfed offset use the zero-speed splicing principle. A fresh paper reel is automatically spliced to the expiring one—without stopping the press.
Here’s how:
- A festoon system above the reels temporarily stores paper.
- During the splice, the press draws paper from the festoon.
- Both reels remain stationary during the splice.
- After splicing, the new reel is accelerated to match press speed.
- This cycle repeats seamlessly with every new splice—fully automatic, no press interruption.
For web inkjet Contiweb also offers a non-stop rewinder which performs the reverse operation. When a paper reel is nearly full, the festoon is filled with printed paper. This allows the rewinder to stop both the full and empty reels, cut the web, and splice it to a new, empty reel—without interrupting production.
Reel loading and splice preparation
Loading a new reel and preparing the splice is quick, safe, and operator-friendly.
- Takes just 2 minutes—while the press keeps running
- Operator simply applies linear adhesive tape for a clean splice
- Performed at floor level, in a safe and ergonomic position
Our unwinders come standard with an overlap splice, with an optional butt splice available.
