Maximizing paper efficiency with the Contiweb CD-N and Smart Reel Data
Contiweb is excited to announce its participation in Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025, taking place from February 24 to 27 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Visitors can find us in Hall 2, where we will unveil an innovative new feature for our CD-N Non-Stop Unwinder and CR-N Non-Stop Rewinder, perfectly aligned with this year’s event theme: CONNECT.
Additionally, the Contiweb DFA Remoistener will be showcased in the demo lines at the HP and Ricoh booths, demonstrating how to address challenges like paper waviness and curling edges caused by high-temperature drying.
A perfect fit for the CONNECT theme
Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025 centers around the theme CONNECT, emphasizing the integration of people, solutions, and processes within the digital printing industry. This theme aligns perfectly with Contiweb’s auto-splicing technology, which seamlessly connects two paper reels without production downtime. With the latest Smart Reel Data (SRD) upgrade for the CD-N Non-Stop Unwinder and the CR-N Non-Stop Rewinder —available as an option on new equipment or as an upgrade for existing equipment—connectivity in digital printing takes another step forward by enabling better tracking and utilization of remaining paper reels.
Maximizing efficiency with Smart Reel Data
In continuous feed inkjet printing, paper reels are sometimes removed before they are fully used, especially when switching to a different paper type for the next job. These partially used reels, known as rest reels, are often left forgotten in storage.
Manual reel changes can take up to 15 minutes, leading operators to question whether the downtime is worth it for just a few remaining meters of paper. Additionally, many planners and operators lack visibility into how many rest reels are left and how much paper remains on each.
With the CD-N Non-Stop Unwinder, switching to a rest reel becomes effortless, as it automatically splices the reels together without stopping production. The new SRD upgrade takes this even further, offering real-time insights into the remaining paper on each reel.
How the upgrade works
When an operator loads a new paper reel into the CD-N Non-Stop Unwinder, he scans the barcode applied by the paper supplier. This barcode contains essential information, including paper type and total length, which is being stored. When the reel is later removed as a rest reel, the operator can print a new label displaying the paper type and remaining length. This label can be attached to the reel for easy identification.
The SRD upgrade also enables seamless integration with other systems and equipment, ensuring smooth data transfer across the production workflow. It uses industry-standard protocols like OPC UA, MQTT, and PLF-I to ensure optimal connectivity.
Part of the broader Contiweb web data program, the SRD upgrade builds on established offset printing practices and sets the stage for future enhancements. These improvements will enable seamless machine data exchange, enhancing user-friendliness, product quality, and operational efficiency.
